How Kentucky Determines Child Support Obligations

In Kentucky, child support is calculated according to the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s pre-determined guidelines that include the:

  • Combined gross monthly income of both parents
  • Number of children
  • Custody agreement between parents
  • Specific needs of each child, including education, child care and more
  • Child’s accustomed standard of living

Exceptions To The Guidelines In Kentucky

Kentucky’s child support guidelines are based on the monthly gross income of both parents and the number of children, with room for some adjustments.

However, the guidelines only apply to parents that earn a combined maximum monthly income of $15,000, or $180,000 per year.

When the income of both parents exceeds this amount, the court will determine an appropriate monthly amount according to the needs of the children and their standard of living.

The court will consider both essential needs and other expenses, including private school tuition, extracurricular activities and more.
